Back in 1968 Barry Smith started part time gunsmithing in his spare time, having previously worked for Mick Smith in george st in sydney NSW.
Business slowly picked up and in 1970 he took up the trade full time from his home workshop at 20 Elsinore St Merrylands.
In 1973 Barry registered N.& S Gunsmiths and moved to a commercial shop front location at 163 Merrylands Rd Merrylands where the business traded for twenty years or so, many people will still remember us from here being only 100 meters or so up from Merrylands station.
During this time Valerie Smith finished her time as a teacher and started working full time in the shop.
This was a great time with the whole family and the children, Graham and David growing up in and around the shop.
The whole family being active shooters and regular hunters.
Barry being a familar regular at hawkesburry gun club , the most promiant clay shooting club at the time (now moved to cecil park)
And a fair shot at that.
The family also liked to hunt, often travelling to cobar, ivanhoe and all over the west in search of various types of game.
In 1993 Barry Purchased new premises and moved to the current location at 65 Helen St, Sefton NSW.
Where we expanded the workshop facilities due to fact that we had more firearms in for repair at any one time, than could be stored.
Once again we rebuilt the retail shop to stock a fair selection of popular firearms, rifles ,pistols, cleaing gear, accessories and so.
This was always risk moving bussiness, but most of our customers followed us over to the new location.
During this time we have become Warranty Gunsmiths to most of the major firearms manufacturers or their distributors in NSW as well as doing gunsmithing for the public, the Army and The Navy, The Police and The Security Industry.
In 1995 Barry registered a new partnership with his wife and changed the name of business to The Gunsmiths .
In 2001 Barrys son Graham Smith returned home, at this point an avid and regular hunter and shooter.
Graham rejoined the family business and quickly took to expanding the services and stock offered.
Grahams interest and knowledge in precision rifles, target guns and all the modern inovations helped to guide the business into an even
greater roll in building custom rifles.
In 2005 Graham took over Managment of The Gunsmiths and setup the first website where by you could browse all our firearms on the shelf in the shop and for sale in an online fashion with pictures and prices available.
This service remains today and is expanding and improving as time goes by.
In 2011 We continue to offer all our years of experience as gunsmiths, whilst heading more into the 21st century by offering more services online by bringing the web site up to a level where goods (excluding firearms) may be purchased online via credit card and bank transactions.
And as ever expanding our range of precision rifle and tactical products as well as making a few of our own.
We still have over 500 firearms onsite and on display in the shop at any one time.
